Why is LJ showing me ads for Sekirei a T&A anime? I need to get adblock/flashblock.

I need to give myself permission to fail Nano yet again this year. For some reason I'm thinking in terms of Christine Miserandino's Spoon Theory where my limits are defined by things I'll let myself obsessively worry about. It's actually a better November than most in that I did an excellent job of writing off politics for the month. But, I'm struggling to get my dissertation through a process that's a bit of a bureaucratic mess and discovering that beyond mere procrastination, I have a mostly crazy and mostly irrational fear of my former university. On top of that, one of my medications appears to be in a three-way mess between doctor, insurance, and pharmacy. So I'm running out of spoons to spend on worrying about word count or failure.

So when I find that the grind of delivering the wordcount has become something to obsessively worry about as opposed to a useful structure for advancing my writing, it's time to back off a bit and rethink my goals there. Especially as I've gone beyond the stage where I can just roll off the easy stuff and have to actually think more about how to develop the conflicts.

NaNoWriMo

Since I'm a glutton for punishment I'm trying NaNoWriMo again. So far, I'm only 600 words behind. But found a cool toy that makes word clouds from text. Here is the second half of Chapter 2.

As with last time, I have the beginning, and the end, and some of the text in between, but I have a lot of blanks to fill in. It's becoming a bit darker than what I expected, but I'm rolling with it.

What is really helping me along in this process is Scrivener. Finally a word processing application that offers support for the prewriting and the writing process. It's so easy to just put in a placeholder for a scene, and then jump to it when I'm ready to write. You can also have "note cards" for research items related to a book.

Now that I have the writing bug, my next novel idea is probably going to be an anti-heroic fantasy that covers 24 hours of time, during a siege of an "evil" wizard's castle. It will probably be very similar to All Quiet on the Western Front.

The nano novel is starting to shape up. It's half cyberpunk, and half Dharma bums. I have the opening two chapters, the first meeting of two pivotal characters, and a bunch of placeholders for stuff to fill in later.

We are renting Lost for the first time, which is pleasantly surprising because television is such crap that even the shows hailed as the best often disappoint me. My goodness, an intelligently written science fiction/suspense show that doesn't suck? A show that may actually have elements of metafiction embedded into it? I don't quite know what to make of it, I suspect that the Island is a big MacGuffin, but it certainly has my interest.

Speaking of television, I spent some downtime from my interview watching a few hours, and discovered:

- There is no longer any actual network news on during primetime, just talking heads pimping outrage.

- I'm pleased that Claudia Black and Ben Browder of Farscape have a job. But it is a crying shame that the show is unwatchable.

- Explosions do not save movies about mythical monsters.
